Curious about what consumables Nest 510k injection pens use?
Nest 510k injection pens are based on the ISO 11608 standard for insulin pens. This means they use readily available standardized pen needles and 3mL cartridges.
The 3mL cartridges are ISO 11608-3 style. They have standardized dimensions and can be sourced from companies like Stevanato Group or Schott. A detailed drawing is below here for reference. When choosing a 3mL cartridge provider be sure the cartridge, septa and stoppers all have a type III DMF filing (this links to the FDA DMF database for your convenience) They are considered pharmaceutical packaging as they will be in direct contract with the drug in the cartridge. If you need help finding a 3mL cartridge supplier please let us know.
There are two consumable considerations when choosing cartridges. They use a rubber stopper as a plunger. These rubber stoppers come in two sizes, small (8.2mm long) and long (11.3mm long). The actual stopper to use it up to you and depends on the compounded concentration. However the injection pens do come in long and short stopper versions to accommodate this seemingly small detail. So be sure to know what type of stoppers you've got. A comparison of the stoppers is below. The pink dotted line shows the slight (3.1mm) difference between the two.
These cartridges also come as either "dirty" cartridges or prewashed, presterilized and presiliconized in ready to use tubs. Most smaller compounding pharmacies and fill finish lines will use ready to use cartridges in tubs. They are an affordable alternative to purchasing the large washing, sterilizing and siliconizing equipment needed to make "dirty" cartridges ready to fill. These cartridges as of 2024 cost around $0.60 each when ready to fill. "Dirty cartridges" cost ~$.01 each. Be warned, filling the cartridges by hand is difficult. They require automation to get reliable aseptic results. Good news is these cartridges have been around since 1985 so nearly every fill finisg manufacturer supports them. Simply ask your fill finish manufacturer if they have change parts for ISO 11608-3 style 3mL insulin or dental cartridges. We can also connect you with 503Bs and CDMOs that support fill finish.
Nest 510k injection pens also need double sided pen needles to work. Thankfully they can be purchased anywhere for $0.10 or less. For semaglutide we suggest 4mm long 32 gauge pen needles. This is what Ozempic or WeGovy pens use as they are so small they almost can't be felt. For deeper subcutaneous injections like testosterone blends, we suggest a wider, longer 12mm, 29 gauge needle that can accommodate viscous solutions and get deeper in the skin.
